So can you survive wilderness alone?

If you read this article you have a good chance but this is not all that is necessary. These are only a few basic tips. To learn more tips for survival:  >>>check this out

In order to take command of the situation that you have gotten yourself into, you have to know certain survival skills.

This way you will not only survive but thrive in the wild.

First of all, before you set off you should be prepared both mentally and physically and make sure that you have done your research and have all the things that you need.

It’s important not to overburden oneself and only carry the things that are essential.

Preparation is the key so pack basic survival tools and gear which include: a compass, a map , lighters or flint and steel, sleeping bag, water bottle, rain suit or poncho, Machete ,fishing line ,Pocket Knife, First Aid Kit, Good Hiking Boots, Binoculars, pepper or Bear Spray, Survival guides, and Whistle.

With a proper kit even if one or two things get lost you will still be able to survive instead of relying on what you can find in the wild.

How to make fire

Fire is important for so many things from protection from predators to cooking food, boiling water, staying warm etc.

Using tinder is best way to start a fire. If you cannot find dry tinder then look for things to use in your kit. Every bag comes with padding and mostly it’s flammable.

For emergency tinder just cut out a few pieces of foam and create a few sparks into them to start a fire. If that is not an option look down at your socks!

Cotton and wool are flammable materials, so start plucking the fibers and loose stands to collect a bundle of tinder which will light easily.

If you are worried about getting your next fire lit, you should take out a piece of leftover charcoal and take it with you. With a shower of sparks, you will have a glowing ember when you need it.

Navigation

Knowing your where you are and what direction to go is also essential.

If you lose your compass then the map will not be able to guide you much. You can, however, make your own compass.

If you have a magnet (from inside the phone or some electronic gadget) then all you need is a metal wire or strip to make an improvised compass.

The metal should be rubbed along the length of the magnet or the other way around for a good few minutes.

When the metal gets magnetized you can use this pin to tell you the direction.

For that, one can put it on a floating light object such as a leaf and put it in still water without any anything else in it.

Voila! The pin will rotate with the leaf and align itself with Earth’s magnetic field (N to S).

For the northern hemisphere the end of the pin close to the sun is south and the opposite way from the sun is north (the opposite applies the southern hemisphere).

You can also look for the Polaris or if it’s a crescent moon draw a line from the top horn to the bottom, extend the line to see where it meets the horizon. This intersection will mark the South.

Water!

Your kit should have lots of water bottles, not just one. Water bottles can come in very handy.

Amazingly, cutting a plastic bottle in half and putting the water that you collected to boil in it won’t melt the bottle.

This way you can boil the water and at the end, you won’t have to discard the bottle.

Plastic bottles can not only boil your water but filter the water too!

Let’s say the only water available for you to collect or drink is putrid, dirty pond water or even puddle water then you will have to filter it out.

That can be done by using the top half of the bottle as a filter.

You just have to put a few holes in the cap, and fill the bottle with some moss, some grass, and small pebbles.

You can now pour the filthy water through this filter and collect it in the bottom half. You can boil this bit if you want more purification.

There are many other ways to collect water such as by wrapping plastic bags around tree branches which will collect dew, also one can collect rain water and also create a solar still.

If all else fails, you can drink your own pee!

Distress Signals

Distress signals can come in many forms such as primitive techniques to modern ones.

When it comes to signaling one should use as many as possible, just to increase the chances to be rescued if you are lost.

A signaling mirror can act as a flashlight and has a range of up to 10 miles during daylight. Sweep it across the target to get their attention.

Flares are the go to when it comes to signaling. Flare guns and flares give the maximum chance of being spotted during the night but it is almost as effective during the day time.

Build a huge fire where there isn’t a chance of fire getting out of hand and aim for a contrast so it can be easily picked up from above.

You can then use thick tropical leaves to create black smoke that will be contrasted against the sky and hopefully gets someone’s attention.

Lastly having a Personal Locator Beacon can do wonders by just a push of the panic button. It is satellite connected and will let you contact authorities and call for help too.

Survival Shelters

You should protect yourself from the elements in the wild.

Turn your surrounding into your shelter which requires less effort.

Look for rock overhangs which make excellent shelters. If it’s not possible you can make shelters such as lean-to, snow caves and Poncho and tarp shelters.

Each of the shelters will have good insulation and good protection.

One will have to put a dense layer of leaves, limbs and pine boughs on the roof or the sides to take shelter from rain and wind.

For your safety from potential animal attacks, it is important to always have a fire burning or to sleep at a higher elevation such as up in trees.

Remember not to burn the shelter down while you keep the fire going!

Of course, there are more skills to be mastered but this alone one can have a better chance of survival and rescue.

With all these skills under your belt, you still have to plan ahead and work fast!

There is no time for daydreaming or strolling around in a survival situation as each second is precious.

In all this don’t lose the hope for rescue and the will to survive. Just keep calm and carry on surviving.

So prepare yourself and the people you care about or pay the price.
